If your regular veterinarian suspects your pet may suffer from a neurologic disorder, our neurologists will work closely with them to ensure your pet receives the highest quality, compassionate care.

All the organs and muscles inside your pet’s body rely upon nerve impulses to function. These impulses travel from the brain and spinal cord to the nerves located throughout the body. A veterinary neurologist must be extensively trained in the diagnosis and treatment of nervous system disorders, including diseases of the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles.

The Neurology service at SLVS utilizes our state-of-the-art, on-site 1.5 Tesla MRI unit for imaging the brain or spine of animals. Other advanced diagnostics conducted by a neurologist include CT scan, CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) collection and analysis, serological testing for infectious diseases, EMG (electromyography) and nerve and muscle biopsies. We work closely with specialists throughout the hospital to ensure comprehensive care, from diagnosis to treatment to rehabilitation and post-operative care.

Some of the brain disorders diagnosed and treated by the Neurology service:

  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Brain cancer/tumors
  • Ischemic infarcts (“strokes”)
  • Encephalitis (GME or infections of the brain)
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Traumatic brain injuries
  • Chiari-malformation/Syringomyelia

Spinal cord disorders diagnosed and treated surgically or medically include:

  • Intervertebral disc herniation (IVDD)
  • Cervical Spondylomyelopathy/Wobbler’s Syndrome
  • Spinal tumors
  • Fibrocartilagenous embolism (FCE)
  • Meningitis
  • Traumatic spinal injuries

Disorders that affect the nerves and muscle:

  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Neuropathies
  • Inflammatory or infectious myopathies (muscle disease)
