Ask Dr. Novosad if immunotherapy is right for your pet
What to expect.
Once your family veterinarian sends your pets referral, Dr. Novosad and his team review your pets medical record prior to scheduling your initial appointment. Once your pet’s record has been reviewed, a member of the Oncology team will call you to set up your initial appointment.
When you arrive for your first appointment, you’ll be asked to fill out new patient/new client information or, you can fill out the new client forms by clicking the button below.
One of our Oncology Technicians will greet you and your pet and go over your pet’s history with you to get a clear picture of what you’re experiencing at home. Then, they’ll take your pet into our treatment area to obtain vitals.
Dr. Novosad will evaluate your pet in the exam room, catalog any masses on your pet, and speak with you at length about your pet, your pets diagnosis, and recommendations.
From there one of our Oncology Technicians will go over the cost associated with your pets plan and help you through the next steps to take for your family.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: What is initial appointment availability?
A: Dr. Novosad sees new patients on Mondays and Fridays, chemotherapy and recheck appointments on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and does not see appointments on Wednesdays or weekends. Schedule is subject to change during vacation or Holidays.
Q: How should I prepare for my pets first visit?
A: Please do not feed your pet on the day of his/her appointment in case testing is performed that day. Not all pets have diagnostics performed at initial appointment however, pets that have eaten are not likely to have testing done that day to avoid complications or altered test results. Please keep fresh water available. All medications should be continued as instructed unless you are told otherwise. For patients with special needs (i.e., diabetic), please contact your doctor prior to your appointment for specific instructions.
Q: What is metronomic chemotherapy?
A: Dr. Novosad and his team offer metronomic chemotherapy which refers to repetitive, low dose chemotherapy used to target tumor stroma or endothelium. This method is designed to minimize toxicity commonly associated with chemotherapeutic drugs.
Q: What is immunotherapy?
A: In short, immunotherapy stimulates the immune system to destroy neoplastic tissue. Melanoma and lymphoma vaccines are offered at SLVS in conjunction with chemotherapy. Dr. Novosad can tell you if your pet would be a good candidate for this type of treatment.
Q: What is staging?
A: Staging means a series of tests run to ensure to the best of our ability that we have located all potential visible cancerous conditions. X-rays of the chest, abdominal ultrasound, blood work, cytology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry and possibly a CT scan are some, but not all tests, that could be part of the staging process. What tests are necessary varies from patient to patient. A breakdown of staging for your pet and its associated cost will be discussed in depth by a member of our Oncology team at the end of your initial exam and consultation.
