Avoid These Dangerous Pet Toys and Treats

As pet owners, we do everything we can to make sure our pet is safe, healthy, happy, and comfortable. Because you want to protect your pet’s health and safety, you should do your due diligence before giving your pet a new toy or treat. Certain pet toys and treats can be a choking hazard, increase the risk of an intestinal blockage, or cause stomach distress. Avoid these dangerous pet toys and treats when choosing a reward for your pet.

Children’s Toys

Children’s toys aren’t designed to withstand heavy chewing. They may also have parts that break off easily and can become a choking hazard or cause an intestinal blockage. Choose toys specifically designed for pets, and that are appropriate for the type of pet you have, his age, and his temperament.

Toys with Stuffing or Small Parts

If your pet destroys toys within minutes, toys full of stuffing or that have small parts that can be chewed off can be dangerous. If your pet consumes the stuffing from inside a toy, it can create a blockage in their GI tract.

Small or Raw Bones

Raw bones can break apart and splinter, causing internal bleeding and intestinal blockages. Small bones can be a choking hazard. If you want to give your pet a bone, ask your veterinarian to recommend ones that are safe for your pet’s age and size.

Pigs Ears

Pig’s ears can become a choking hazard and cause an intestinal blockage. They can also harbor dangerous bacteria and are greasy, which can upset your pet’s stomach.

Fatty or Sugary Treats

Overly fatty or sugary treats can cause obesity and increase your pet’s risk of diabetes, heart disease, and joint pain. Ask your veterinarian to recommend healthy, safe pet treats.

If your pet may have eaten parts of a toy, or if your pet is showing signs of gastrointestinal distress, you should take him to your closest emergency veterinary hospital as soon as possible.
