You may think of your home as a safe place, but kids and pets can be at risk for hazards you may not even have thought of. We’re committed to helping your entire family stay safe–try following these safety tips around the house to reduce the risk of any potential accidents.
Use Non-Skid Surfaces
Common flooring materials like hardwood and linoleum tile can be slippery, but kids and pets may not know that. If they’re running around the house causing mischief, it would be all too easy for them to slip and fall. If you do have slippery floors, try covering them with a rug or anti-skid mat. If any foods or liquids spill, clean them up right away. Young kids are notorious for making messes during mealtime, and pets may accidentally consume foods and drinks that aren’t safe for them. Keep pets away from children when they’re eating and vice versa, and always clean up before letting kids and pets back in dining areas.
Block Access to Dangerous Areas
Kids and pets are curious by nature, so they may try to explore areas that can be dangerous for them. Secure any cupboards or drawers with childproof locks to keep kids from rummaging around in them. Additionally, make sure all cleaning supplies, medications, and other potentially hazardous items are completely out of reach.
Secure Appliances and Valuables
Young children may try to grab onto the handles of ovens, fridges, and other appliances. Make sure they are secure and can’t be easily pulled down or opened by kids or pets. It’s also a good idea to keep any valuable items like jewelry in places where kids and pets can’t get them.
If your pet is new to your home, it’s important to take them in for a checkup right away. Your veterinarian can make sure they are healthy and have all the necessary vaccinations. If your pet is injured due to an accident in the home, don’t hesitate to contact your local emergency veterinarian for immediate care.
